Great news, gang! Backstage Pass is now available for Early Access on Steam. We've been working really hard to get here, and and we couldn't have done it without all the incredible support from all of you. Thank you!
If you've been following us on twitter, you already knew this was coming. It's the packaging for the standard edition and it's super pretty!

A few other news items for you: A game update should be coming soon. I've got a couple days of uninterrupted work coming up (fingers crossed), so I'm hoping to finally catch up on stuff. Our Steam early access is also prepped and waiting for Valve to approve it. I don't know how long that will take, but hopefully it'll be soon!Ayu Sakatahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08881298318653004132noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8714379400054757338.post-3117449544067553412014-05-17T13:37:00.002-07:002014-05-21T22:59:26.975-07:00Backstage Pass Weekly Update 02

Not much news this week, but we've got some good things to cover, including an important question.

First off, the life situation is starting to get a little better. It still hasn't left me with much time to work on Backstage Pass, but it looks like things are starting to work out. Fingers crossed. Backstage Pass is now running fine on Steam. Early Access should start soon.

AND, physical editions are currently being worked on. Hopefully by next week I'll be able to give you a preview of the standard edition featuring new original artwork by tooaya.

We're also working on the special edition right now, and this is where I need feedback from you guys. Right now, the special edition includes the following:
- The game (duh)
- CD of the OST
- CD of Adam Eaton's EP, "Island Heart"
- Companion book with designs, sketches, info, and other stuff
- Five character postcards
- Codes for Steam and Desura

As it stands, I'm not sure how many copies I should have made, so I need a show of hands to get an idea of how many people are interested in having a special edition. Right now I'm being told the final price will be around $70 each, but if we get a lot of people interested, they can lower the price, and I think we would all really like that.

Edit: Anyone who pre-orders will have the option to upgrade for the price difference. You won't be required to buy the entire thing again. Ayu Sakatahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08881298318653004132noreply@blogger.com27tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8714379400054757338.post-34960698550721365932014-05-10T13:17:00.002-07:002014-05-10T13:17:40.995-07:00Backstage Pass Weekly Update 01

Spent most of this week working on the hidden routes, so not too many screencaps to share. Except the above one, which means exactly what you think it means. The original plan was to release an update with all the routes at the same time, but chances are we'll do one at a time. Also managed to hunt down a few bugs. Fixes will go up with the next beta update.

Also did a little bit of work on our Steam port. If we're lucky, we can get Early Access up for you cool people too. We've got some fun achievements lined up (that may or may not include cupcakes), and I'm trying to figure out trading cards - if anyone has any requests or ideas for trading cards, feel free to leave a comment.

All in all, didn't get as much work done as I had hoped this week, but we look set to have a new route available soon!Ayu Sakatahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08881298318653004132noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8714379400054757338.post-44435380999393402872014-05-02T09:46:00.001-07:002014-05-02T09:55:21.005-07:00Backstage Pass Updates

Alright, gang. It's the start of May, the latest beta update still isn't out, and I'm sure most of you are wondering what's up with Backstage Pass. Well, this is the post I hoped I wouldn't have to make, but it's an important one. First off, don't panic, everything's going to be okay. It's just going to take a little longer than we had hoped.

So where are we when it comes to finishing Backstage Pass? Pretty darn far, actually. Our talented team members have all finished their respective jobs - be sure to thank Lulin, Graeme, and Marc. I've also clocked in 15+ hours in the studio and online with the voice actors (with many more to come). So what does that leave? It leaves putting it all together, fixing bugs, and adding extra content in places that all you excellent beta testers have found to drag on too much. A big task, but a doable one, and two weeks ago, one I was on track to finish by today.

These past two weeks have been very unexpected weeks.

When people ask for advice on making visual novels, I generally suggest padding the schedule to make sure you've got emergency time for unexpected events. What if a relative dies? What if work suddenly adds more hours to your schedule? What if you get sick? However, it never occurred to me to plan for what to do if every emergency happens at the same time. That's kind of where I am right now.

At the moment, I can't share details, since other people are involved who might want to be more private, but I'm juggling several work and personal things.Things are mostly under control now, which is why I've finally found time to sit down and write this post. However, the temporary solution has cut down the amount of time I have to work on Backstage Pass. In the past, I was able to get close to a full work day in every day. Right now, I'm getting 1-2 hours a day if I'm lucky.

What does that mean for Backstage Pass? It means we'll get it done, but the schedule's going to change a bit. We could probably slap a little plaster on it and release it now, but everyone on the team wants this to be a game you guys will love for years to come, so we're not going to take that path. I'll be posting weekly updates to keep you guys in the loop, so please look forward to those.

In the meantime, a huge thanks to all of you guys for supporting us so far. Your words of encouragement and enthusiasm have been amazing. Thanks to the beta testers for being so thorough in helping us make this game great. Thanks to everyone who pre-ordered (because of you, I was able to divert an especially nasty crisis). And thanks to anyone reading this. You guys all rock, and we're going to make sure this game rocks too.Ayu Sakatahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08881298318653004132noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8714379400054757338.post-88498509979388001902014-04-01T11:23:00.003-07:002014-04-01T11:23:31.703-07:00We're Doing Edutainment!

I'm super excited to announce that our next major project will be an edutainment (educational entertainment) visual novel. We're hoping to reach pre-school audiences with lessons in things like shapes, colors, and numbers. But for our normal fanbase, worry not! Our trademark storytelling with deep plots and suspenseful twists is still here, so you can still enjoy the story! I can't wait to reveal more details, but I'm sure you guys will love this new direction we're taking, and we're hoping our games will be played in every classroom across the world!

Well, it's been another year, gang! Last year, the rule I imposed on myself for this year was "start nothing new, and finish everything else." As it stands, I only managed to finish the first half, but at least that's progress!

In 2012, we didn't release anything, but in 2013 we released Yousei, so that means we're winning! I'm very proud of Yousei - I feel like every Jisei game is better than the last, and I feel like this one reached new heights in every aspect. It was also great to be able to explore more of the history of the main characters.

Obviously, most of this year's time has gone into making Backstage Pass. This VN is a beast, with more branches and more stuff in it than anything else we've done. We're very near to the end, so please look forward to it.

Every Sunrise! In case you guys have been wondering what's up with Every Sunrise, artist Deji has been very busy with several other projects. But this year, we're back in business, so please look forward to more adventures with Kuu and Koda!

And speaking of Deji's art, our murder mystery fans have not been forgotten. We've got big plans for the next chapter in the Jisei series. Kangai and the gang are going to follow up on the mysterious invitation they received at the end of Yousei, and Kangai won't be able to hide his past anymore. Plus the appearance of a mysterious person who's only been mentioned in passing before. Who could it be?
Plus! We are still working on Oneiro. Yeah, it's totally been years since we started this, but it is not forgotten. Just slow. D: I don't know how far we'll get with this, but I will keep you updated as we go.

And there's the state of things right now. Thank you all SO much for a great 2013, and I look forward to what 2014 holds for all of us.Ayu Sakatahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08881298318653004132noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8714379400054757338.post-57313185098039494562013-12-24T09:00:00.000-08:002013-12-24T09:57:48.167-08:00Backstage Pass - Exciting Things! : D

Hi. My name is Ayu, and I work with artists. (Crowd: Hi, Ayuuuu.) For a bit of context (in case you are new here), I run a group called sakevisual. We make visual novels. At the moment, we're best known for the Jisei series (Jisei, Kansei, Yousei, etc.) and Backstage Pass. I also write a comic on the side called Ties That Bind.

I do a lot of things for sakevisual. I write, code, direct voice actors, and fill in all the bits and bobs that need to be done. However, I do not draw. I have chosen to work with artists instead, and I've had a lot of people ask me how to "find" artists, or what it takes to get a talented artist to work with you. This was initially going to be a single post, but it turns out there's a lot I want to write. So here's the first installment: Payment.

--

Should I pay my artist?
I know, I know. The first installment in the series, and we're already tackling the most uncomfortable part: money. Awkwaaard. But hey, why not?

So, should you pay your artist? If you plan to be making money off of your project in any way, yes. Whether you're selling it, selling merchandise, or just putting ads on your site, yes you should pay your artist. If you plan to be making money, the people who help you get there should be making money too. If your project is not making money in ANY way, you still should probably pay your artist. But we'll talk on that later. Right now, I'm going to share a little story!

The first job I ever applied for was a waitress gig at my favorite little bistro down the street from where I lived. I polished up what little resume I could, wore my nicest shirt, and went in for an interview. The interview went well at first. The owner of the restaurant said that I had a good presence and my knowledge of his menu was impressive. After a few minutes of talking, he smiled and said "You're hired!"
"Great!" I said, "If it's not too impertinent to ask, what's my hourly rate?"
The owner arched an eyebrow, as if I had just asked the world's dumbest question. "Oh, you're not getting PAID for this."
I was dumbfounded "What? Why not?"
"I can't afford to! I don't make that much money off of this. We're not like some big chain of fast food places with tons of money to just throw around! This is a small business!" He put a reassuring hand on my shoulder, "But don't worry. Our reviews online are great. People come from all over to eat here. I'm sure one of the patrons will see what a good waitress you are. Your work here could lead to paying work somewhere else. Owning my own restaurant is my dream! Don't you want to be a part of that?"
I sighed and nodded. "I understand. That sounds fair to me. When do I start?"

I'm going to stop here and point out that the above story is a complete fabrication, but I assume you've already figured that out, because I'd have been an idiot to accept that job. Exposure is not payment. Being part of someone else's dream is not payment. The fact that you don't have much money is not an excuse. If you're making money off of this, pay your artist.

Okay, how do I pay my artist?
Thanks for sticking with me! I assume if you're reading this you didn't leave in an angry huff ready to write your rebuttal post about why you shouldn't have to pay artists. There are several ways to work out payment, and it will change depending on which artist you work with, the nature of the project, and the nature of your relationship. The following are all methods of payment I have employed over the years:

-Per Piece: You pay your artist for each finished piece created. For instance, $40 for each sprite. $100 for each CG. A good idea for beginners or people on a lower budget, especially if this is your first time working with the artist. The best part is that you know exactly how much money you're going to spend. If you have two sprites and a CG, you know from the start that you'll need $180 for your project. Easy.

-Per Hour: You pay your artist for every hour spent working on your project, regardless of the number of final pieces you've called for. Good for people who have worked together a bit already. I've found that artists tend to take longer if they're working on a hourly rate - not because they're stretching their pay, but because they have more freedom to do the best work they can. Hourly pay tends to produce things with more care, thought, and detail. And yes, I am well aware there are artists more than happy to scam a deal like this by reporting inflated hours, which is exactly why I suggested this arrangement for people who have already spent time working together and building trust.

-Royalties/Profit Split: The artist receives a percentage of the sales of the final product. Very rare and generally not recommended, especially for a first-timer. It can be appealing to not have to pay anything up front, but no artist is going to want to draw a hundred pieces for a game that might only sell two copies. If you are already well-known and have high sales, then you should have enough money to pay someone. The only exception I personally make is in the case of a partnership. As in, the writer and artist are a creative team, and developed the entire story together (as opposed to a writer hiring an artist to illustrate the writer's story).

Right. So when do I pay my artist? (AKA: What if my artists flakes out on me?)
Hey potential artist hirers, I get it. You've tried before, and the artist has disappeared mid-project leaving you with a half completed piece and a hole in your wallet. I've got an entire folder of sprites, backgrounds, and other things that were supposed to be projects, then weren't because the artist disappeared. I've paid everything up front, and wound up with nothing. I've even had someone try to sell me a couple sprites he had commissioned in the hopes that he could recoup some of his costs.

But let it be known, that artists have had to deal with a lot of flake-outs as well. People "forget" to pay. People refuse to pay. There have been several notorious incidents of people paying, then contesting the pay on PayPal or credit card and getting all their money back. There are bad apples in every bunch, and as much as you're worried that some artist is going to gleefully skip away with your cash, some artist is worried that you're going to gleefully skip away with their hours of hard work.

Here are several payment schedules I've used, along with how I feel about them:

-The half and half (or the three way split). You pay half up front, then the second half after the final piece is delivered. Both parties share the risk, and lose less if one or the other drops out. Some artists I've seen split payment into thirds: a third up front, a third upon delivery of the sketch (and approval of the sketch), then the final third once the piece is completed. A good place to start for people who have never done anything together. This tends to work better for smaller jobs, single commissions, etc.

-As you go. Pay the artist as each piece is completed. For instance, $40 as soon as they finish a sprite. Or whatever you offered for their hourly rate. Better for larger projects, and easier to keep track of your money, plus the artist is compensated immediately.

-Regular installments: The artist gets an agreed upon amount every week/month/whatever until you've finished paying. This could be a fixed number (say, $50/week), or a variable (for instance, their hourly rate times the number of hours they worked last week). The fixed number is good if you have limited money but you know you can spare a certain amount each week. It's a little harder on the artist, unless you've proven you're trustworthy, but it still is less risky than the last two payment options.

-Upon Completion: The artist is paid after finishing all the work. Generally not recommended, as it keeps the artist waiting, and stacking up payments can rake you a much bigger bill than expected. It's better to spend $100 a week than show up at the end and realize you owe thousands of dollars.

-Up front: The artist is paid entirely up front. Again not recommended, as the artist can now disappear with your money. I've had terrible bad fortune with this one, and it shouldn't be a surprise as to why. There are some cases in which this is necessary, namely if you are hiring a large studio or group that needs to pay its employees on a regular basis. (But really, hiring a large studio isn't recommended for an indie project anyway, so...)

--

Wow, even after breaking up the post, this still wound up really long. Anyway guys, in closing I just want to say that there's no "best way" to do it. Everyone has a preferred method. This is just a summary of my experience thus far, and I hope it helps you figure out what works best for you.

In the next post, we'll talk about planning ahead and making an appealing recruitment post.

It's that time of the year, kids! Summer is drawing to a close, and sakevisual is about to make one last convention run. Here's our schedule for the rest of the year:

MatsuriCon - August 23-25, Columbus, OH
Head writer Ayu Sakata and voice actor Micah Solusod (voice of Naoki Mizutani and Adam Eaton) are both official guests of the con. The schedule isn't up yet, but look out for Q&A sessions with each of them as well as a "Making Visual Novels" panel run by Ayu. We will have a table in the dealer's room if you want to come by and buy cool stuff or get anything signed.

AnimeFest - August 30-September 2, Dallas, TX
We will have table in the dealer's room again this year, so please look for us. Several EVN creators will be hanging out at AnimeFest as well, so if you've wanted to meet someone, there's a good chance you'll see them at this con. Deji, the lead artist for Ripples and the Jisei games will be putting in a rare appearance (flying all the way in from Chile). If you have anything you've bought in the past that you want signed by her, be sure to bring it! Our "Making Visual Novels" panel will run on Sunday at 4:00pm. Check the program book for details. On top of that, PyTom (creator of Ren'py) will be leading a Ren'py workshop in the computer lab, so this is the perfect time for anyone who wants to make a VN to come by and get started!

M.A.I. - September 14-15, Oxford, MS
Hey, Mississippi! Looks like you've got a new con, and we're honored to be a part of it. Micah and Ayu will be guests here as well, with a table for you guys to stop by at to get sakevisual games or just chat. No panel information yet, but we'll keep you updated.Ayuhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13026456855883592013noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8714379400054757338.post-12242285332468516302013-07-10T08:50:00.001-07:002013-07-10T08:51:59.166-07:00Backstage Pass Updates

Here's a short video of Adam's intro scene in Backstage Pass. (It's also the opening scene of the game.) Although the voices aren't in place yet, you should still get a pretty good idea of Adam and Sian's dynamic.

In terms of how far along we are, nearly all the sprites are done (14/15), and the writing for the first quarter of the game is basically set. We're working on polishing the framework right now to get all those stats working and in good order.

Here's a handy dandy screen that you can look at to see how you're doing! It's handy AND dandy. For those wondering when this will be complete, we still don't have a hard date, but we're aiming for sometime this year, so please look forward to it. As usual, you can find WIP shots and mini-updates on all of our social networks: facebook, twitter, tumblr. Another year, another A-KON! This year, A-KON moved into a lovely new hotel with larger accommodations and a stunning amount of expensive (and potentially delicate) artwork. Thankfully, we didn't break anything, unless you count BREAKING IT DOWN for an impromptu dance party (Henoheno knows where it's at.) We shared a table with our friends at Sayuri Studios and some pretty sweet pachinko machines. In general, our table was a little out of the way, but persistent fans managed to find us anyway, which just proves how much you guys rock.

Bullet Points:
-Saw several cosplayers from various otome games like Hakuouki and Amnesia. It's really nice to see how popular otome games are getting.
-We got featured on the FUNimation live stream. Went on and talked about our games for a bit. :D
-I don't have to explain to people what visual novels are anymore. Three years ago, no one knew what they were. Now, nearly everyone has heard of them, or has a friend who likes them, or has tried one out on a whim.
-There was a food truck outside and I wanted a vegetarian taco, but they drove away. : (

Our next con will be MatsuriCon in Ohio. Be sure to check the official sakevisual site for an up-to-date list of where we'll be next.Ayuhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13026456855883592013noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8714379400054757338.post-5393220807832366242013-05-18T13:16:00.004-07:002013-05-18T13:16:59.591-07:00Backstage Pass - Updates and Answers

If you've been following twitter, facebook, or tumblr, some of this will look familiar to you. We've been posting little snippets and teasers over the past month, but now it's time for a nice, proper, update with answers to our most frequently asked questions.

We've been getting a lot of questions along the lines of "How far along are you?" and "When do you think BP will be out?" Short answer: No idea. The longer (potentially useful, but hey maybe not) answer is that we're aiming to get it done this year, but you never know what could happen. In total, we've completed probably 15% of all our assets. As in, add up the writing, art, music, voices, etc. and that's the meter. However, that doesn't account for putting it all together in a coherent fashion, or handling that mythical beta testing stage.

Regarding beta testing, we'll be doing the same thing we did with Yousei, as that turned out to be very successful. When the demo is complete, we'll have an open beta for anyone to play around with. We'll then open up pre-orders for early access to the whole game.

Recording has begun for most of the main cast, but we'll be holding open auditions a few months down the road for supporting cast and extras. Remember, if you want to audition, add yourself to the mailing list here. We are not accepting pre-submissions, and all open roles will be handled at once.

Aaand, some quick (but important) updates:

- We've got a fantastic opening song in the works by Junko Fujiyama. Junko's a Japanese singer/songwriter, but she now lives and performs in the United States. We're very happy to have her on board with us.

- The final price for Backstage Pass is $30. It's more than our other games, but we're pricing this based on the size of the final product and the cost of other similar games. Pre-orders will be available at a discount.

- We'll also be releasing a special edition that includes a copy of the OST and Adam Eaton's first EP. Details to come later.Ayuhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13026456855883592013noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8714379400054757338.post-19447115253132837462013-03-17T10:51:00.001-07:002013-03-17T16:30:52.897-07:00Fanart Contest Winners!

Only four more major characters left to introduce, so let’s get them out
in one go. Wooo! They’re all industry related, so it makes sense.

Name: Dale
Age: 25
Occupation: Photographer
A
photographer who’s grown disillusioned with the entertainment industry.
He continues his work because he’s good at it and it pays the bills,
but he finds actors, directors, and everyone else in the “biz” to be
annoying and self-absorbed.

Name: Nicole
Age: 17
Occupation: Model
A carefree model with a natural beauty and a keen sense of fashion. She and Matthew were hired to do a shoot together, and she’s been interested in him ever since. Extremely territorial.

Name: Allison
Age: 21
Occupation: Actress(?)
An
aspiring actress trying to break into television on her own. Energetic,
outgoing, and vibrant, but not terribly good at acting. She makes
friends easily, and she’s a hard worker, but it might be difficult for
her to advance on nothing but enthusiasm.

Name: Madeline
Age: 43
Occupation: Manager, Mother, Pretty Much Everything Else
Former
model, and original poster girl for her own line of cosmetics. Madeline
had an extremely successful career, and now she expects her son Matthew to do the same. She’ll do whatever it takes to give her son a competitive edge.Ayuhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13026456855883592013noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8714379400054757338.post-64613488244078760242013-02-27T11:30:00.000-08:002013-02-27T11:30:00.735-08:00Lloyd Newton Voice Sample

Another voice sample! Not one of the four mains, but Lloyd’s
a pretty integral character in several of the routes, so you’ll be
hearing a lot of him. He’s super chill and likes to joke around a lot,
which basically makes him my favorite character to write.
